DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PAST 24 HOURS


National Disaster Management Centre has declared a National State of Disaster:​

  • The Department of Cooperative Governance has developed the regulations to guide activities activated as a result of the national state of disaster. Minister Dlamini Zuma is expected to discuss the regulations with the MECs for COGTA through a teleconference. The department will also be discussing the possibility of postponing the municipal bi-elections with the Independent Electoral Commission. Minister Dlamini Zuma also told media today that municipalities will be engaged about the provision of sanitation measures to communities.
  • The confirmed number of people who have acquired COVID-19 is 61 as of 15 March 2020.Other cases are being confirmed by the relevant authorities.​

Travelling:

South Africans are not allowed to travel to countries regarded as high risk due to their high number of COCID-19 cases,i.e, United Kingdom, United State of America, Italy, China, Iran, South Korea, etc.

  • South Africans who have visited high-risk areas from the middle of February 2020 are required to come forward for testing.
  • Non-essential domestic travel must be restricted.
  • Thirty-five land ports are shut down as from today, Monday 16 March 2020

​​Gatherings: 

  • Gathering of 100 or more people is prohibited, if it is unavoidable then strict health measures must be put in place.
  • The prohibition affects all type of events, including public commemorations or celebrations events.

​Schools​

  • All schools will close from 18 March 2020 until after the Easter holidays.
  • Universities and colleges are required to strengthen their hygiene regimen.​​

Business

  • Businesses are required to strengthen their hygiene regimen.
  • Government and private sector are developing a system to track and monitor people infected with COVID-19.
